Quiet evening

leftovers and Beowulf…. 2/3rds of a good movie.  I know the original poem didn’t know its accent from its ass (to quote the charming Bill Burroughs) although I didn’t know, until I read the wikipedia article, that some people think the whole poem’s a fraud and wasn’t even written until the 16th century, as that’s when the manuscript miraculously turned up; the accents in the soundtrack come from everywhere in the northern world at that point, which wouldn’t have been too different from real life, when there was a lot of travelling across the northern sea.  I didn’t find the accents as weirding as some critics did; I guess after reading Dunnett’s King Hereafter I was prepared to hear just about anything.

Loved the monster Grendel.  The script was interesting in spots but mostly so pedestrian that I wanted to slap somebody.

Aw gone

So I’m out of the old place completely, and apart from swimming in a sea of crap – Jeff is being patient, because I know I have to disappear the crap before the party on Friday – I am feeling pretty good about it.

My good feelings are grounded in three events of yesterday – Katie’s efficient and tireless assistance in the packing, cleaning & moving, and the unpacking when I got here because of course I couldn’t hang around, I had to take the truck back instantly – watching this movie (highly recommended) as the three of us collapsed after I sponsored a meal over at the James Street Cafe – and Mike dropping by.  Supportive friends and family are part of what makes life worth living.

Anyway I’ve got half an hour to fetch laundry from downstairs and get clean and clothed, but at least me and all my clothes are in one place now!  Ack, down one person at work – can’t be late.

I don’t even feel too rough this morning, although I had a hard time getting off the couch last night!

Sundry

It had to happen.

I’m off to the US today.  I have to leave to go pick the car up in about an hour.  It used to be that you took your birth cert and off you went, and now it’s B1 letter and passport and be prepared for a lengthy wait.  I am glad I am going, but not glad that my back will be trashed by the time I crawl into bed tonight – and it’s been so good since Monday night – and not glad about some other things about which it would be impolitic and possibly career limiting to whinge.
Beef teriyaki stir fry last light, and an episode of Deadwood.  Managed to get my driver’s license address/care card address changed, and stopped off at Brentwood on the way home for ingredaments – what is it about pea pods that makes stir fries automatically better?  I’ve fired off the invite for the housewarming (April 4) and the first FNFD (April 11) and I’ve already gotten a couple of responses, which is great.  Ack, time for a shower.

Eddie was meowing at the back door at 4:22 this morning.   Pouring rain still.  Flurried briefly on the mountain yesterday, everybody in my department all looked up from their desks and gasped simultaneously.

Unpacking

Unpacked 1 kitchen box, hung up some clothes and then back to BGs3 and Ds1.

Keith was here.  I texted Paul to let him know he was here overnight.

My life is a long list of people who won’t pick up their phones. This won’t last, I’m just peevish.
Recently learned that the ‘professional’ painters left an open can of pain thinner at their place of work, which happens to be Kopper’s house, thank you very much, thus nearly killing the fume-sensitive occupants.  Bad word connoting bad manners and stupidity.

Cooked halibut, tater tots and corn last night, with crunchy veggies on the side.  Mind you, Jeff had to say something like, “Wanna order in?” before I got off my butt and started doing like Ah promised.  I am now officially a BG fan but I want to kill Baltar and slap the Colonel around some too.  At least I have a fighting chance of understanding the BG filk now!

Got home in exactly 55 minutes last night.  This is not the transit time – this is the time it takes me to walk up to the bus stop, wait for the bus, get to the Skytrain, transfer, get on another bus, and walk through my back door. This is half an hour faster than it used to take me to get home to 2nd St.  I am not displeased.
Seems like some boys at work shaved head over Easter.  Fanboy (a guy in my department) showed up with an extreme load of stubble, RobofNine took it down to his dome, practically.  All that shiny pink skin, disturbing somehow.

Grr

Tonight, a trip to the ‘investment counsellor’ followed by daughter Katie kicking me around my apartment and telling me to pack boxes – which I neglected to pick up from Jeff’s last night.  I feel totally useless and extremely sleepy.

Last night, Superbad.  Meh.  I just couldn’t channel my inner teenaged boy to enjoy this movie, although I have to admit the dialogue was great.  I just had forgotten how ******* horrible teenaged boys are…. this being an accurate rendition thereof.

Moving in the slow lane

Dragged my musical instruments over to the new place last night, on the theory I will be more likely to want to live where my mandolin is…  Also watched Perfect Stranger. Meh.  I liked the first half hour but the tenth time I saw Bruce Willis filmed with the top third of his head missing I started giggling. If you like the camera panning over the many assets of Halle Berry in a variety of expensive and tastefully clingy garments, this movie will appeal.  She is hotter than a two dollar pistol, no question.

Geeking out

Honest to god, Kung Fu Mike wasn’t through the door at the new place an inch before he and Jeff were geeking out.  Mike and I hung around for a Few Days in September and a single beer, and then I got a lift home.  A pleasant evening hanging around and watching a movie and shooting the breeze.

Earlier Mike and I went to Kathmandu Cafe.  Small menu but everything we ate was delicious.

We got to the new place and Jeff had already set up the tvs. He described how he got everything moved – I was stunned because that stuff is super awkward when you’re by yourself.  Mike drooled so hard on the tv (and why not) and examined it closely for burnt out pixels. Then they geeked out some more (Jeff moved through part of a scenario in Assassin’s Creed.)  Happy sigh. All in all a thoroughly satisfying evening, and I even got enough sleep!!  No packing, of course….
Oh, and Gizmo ran away earlier and came back while Mike and I were visiting. Then he demanded to be let out again, and I told Jeff to let him.  (He showed up, guzzled some food, and demanded to be let out again…. welcome to having a teenager, I said.)

Meditations on the bringing of a drug to market

In the marvellous Dorothy Dunnett novel King Hereafter there are a number of set pieces during which our heroine, the radiant, ravishing, self-willed Groa (Ingebjorg) is given an opportunity to participate in the councils of the great.  The men will sit around after supper talking, and drinking, but in moderation and in consideration of their dignity, and will say unbelievably cryptic things and then pause and look at each other like something out of a fricking Ingmar Berman movie.  Our heroine will learn that it behooves one to only have the best information to share with the menfolks or stay silent.

At one point, one of the menfolks says something, and there’s a pause, and somebody else says, “Is that a good thing?” and the response of the king is to say “It’s an interesting thing,” and then there’s another one of these massive, borborygmic pauses.

Such is my emotion on learning that there’s this thing on the internet (from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (2008, January 9)). Reversal Of Alzheimer’s Symptoms Within Minutes In Human Study. about immediate amelioration of Alzheimer symptoms – on one person!  One person?  Is it a good thing?  Possibly.  It’s an interesting thing, and that’s because we all imagine our deaths, and spending 10 or 15 years cuckoo and non-participatory and wacky-tacka aforehand is not how most of us want to go, however often and with however much fear we may foresee it.  Supposing this stuff works?  They jam some stuff in your cerebrospinal fluid, and it either hoovers up the bad crap that is preventing your brain from working properly and actually spits it out in a format that your body’s clean up crew can deal with, or it kicks it out of where it’s binding to, or does something else I can’t imagine or describe.  Further suppose they figure out a way of getting it into you that doesn’t involve making holes in your spine, always a task fraught with hazard.  Interestingly enough it’s an offlabel use of an existing drug, etanercept.  Man, there are so many offlabel uses for so many drugs.  Some of them are downright criminal and ought to be dealt with summarily, but others should receive placid encouragement.  Is this application of etanercept such a case, or is it just another bunch of goddamned carnies with a stake in the outcome beating on the side of a barrel?  Time will tell.
Oh, and I watched the first 2/3rds of Hot Fuzz tonight.  I couldn’t stand to watch all of it, as the first part of the movie was delightful, and the last third of carnage was not…. at least to my view.  I’m dreffle tired of 25 minute shootouts, although I really liked the shootout in 3:10 to Yuma.

Tetris made of people

Quite literally, what it says.

It’s snowing again.

Daughter Katie’s coming over this afternoon and We Will, We Will Deadwood.  Hopefully the transit system is up to the task of getting her here.

I found a hilarious critique of Libertarianism on line.

Last night I dreamed I was back in the High Park area of Toronto.  I guess I’m sick of looking at stucco houses.  I miss many things about Toronto; I miss seeing the CN Tower and I miss a lot of the friends I have there (Tammy, Catherine, Dave, Jan and others).  I miss Kensington Market the way it was, I miss the colour of Lake Ontario on a windy fall day, I miss being able to ice skate outside in the wintertime.

Sometimes I wish I could live in three places at once, because there are things I miss about Montreal too.  I miss the Dorval circle and the absolutely craziness of the town when the festivals like the Jazz festival and Just For Laughs were on; I miss how people dress with more style and drive with more verve (and frankly, consistently better than the unwashed hordes of incompetents who adorn the roads in Vancouver); I miss being able to hear Inuktitut spoken in the street; I miss skating in La Centre de la Nature in Laval, the best outdoor skating venue in Canada; I miss the wild variety of the weather, even.

Peaceful

Apart from Daxus’ phone call to kid Katie yesterday morning, from which much heat and little light and me itching to slap him one, it was an extremely peaceful day.  We took a walk across campus in the early evening and inspected the statuary and the reflecting pond, covered with a skin of ice, and considering that we’d been closeted with Al Swearengen all day, we really needed the walk.

In about an hour I’ll head off to church.

Ow

I tripped and fell over a piece of furniture last night (thanks be daughter Katie was out of the room and did not, therefore, see my humiliating pirouette and crash) and now I am in a somewhat pained and feeble mood – and of course I injured myself in exactly the same part of my back as I hurt 2 years ago.  Grrrr.  However, Deadwood is keeping us occupied….  We are well into the second season.

Let’s all thank big pharma for Robaxicet, I have been sucking them back like candy.  On the basis of my mobility I estimate it will be about two weeks before I’m feeling back to normal, or what passes for normal these days.

Kid Katie

She was here last night and we had an IMMENSE Deadwood fest.  We’re up to episode 11 and if midnight hadn’t come and gone we would have been good for more.  Calamity Jane is her fave primary character; her fave secondary character is Charlie Utter.  Later….. booked the Prius and now I gotta get her to work.
