Richer nations are one of the causes of the problem, whether it be over consumption of the resource or the habit of building in places where water supplies are naturally low to begin with. Such nations have the technical and fiscal clout to undertake the only viable solution – desalinate ocean water on a massive scale! My two cents.
OMG, you beat me to it. To boot, Canada has been exporting desalination expertise to 3rd world countries for years, don’t ask me how I know, but I saw it somewhere (Discover magazine? Now defunct since Guccione bought it). Apparently we are leaders in that technology, as well as having more water than everyone else put together. What is our ‘engineer corps’ called anyway?
