I have mixed feelings about this particular artefact — it’s become part of the tradition on Harvard campus.
A recent New Scientist book review (The Rosetta Stone and the Rebirth of Ancient Egypt) suggests that the Rosetta Stone, which has been in the British Museum since 1802, should go back to Egypt…Same has been said for the Elgin marbles, to go back to Greece. And last week here in BC a group of First Nations people brought home for burial the bones of their ancestors which had been archeologically looted by a museum a century or more ago…
I recall the frisson of awe on looking at the Rosetta Stone, also experienced on looking at the skull of the Taung child (the first Australopithecine discovered) even though it was a replica. Some artifacts have the power of religious icons…
