True. But I applaud the effort to know it, painful though it might sometimes be. It gets less painful the further back one goes. Great-Aunt Mary’s life in revolutionary Russia is painful. “Naughty” Elizabeth’s life in England in the early eighteenth century is merely entertaining. Pain is evoked learning of all past generations’ lives based on one’s own life and experience. As a retired health professional I agonize over the frightening deficiencies in health care, and the unnecessary (from today’s perspective) deaths. The maternal and child deaths are especially hard to take…
