Wow is right! I can’t really comprehend how the air traffic controllers manage the US airspace. I did date an air traffic controller once and he said it’s a really stressful job and the burnout rate is very high.
The movement of the planes from east to west in the morning looked almost organic, like the movement of light emitting critters at the bottom of the ocean. It sure is a stressful job. English is the language of aviation, so you often have a situation where someone whose first language is french trying to communicate in english with someone whose first language is spanish or chinese.
And this is why I won’t be doing any overseas traveling any more. Well – ONE of the reasons. I felt safer when I didn’t know about this.
