Dead junco

I found it going in to work the other day, and I love these birds, and it bothered me that the only way I could really honour how amazingly beautiful it was involved taking a picture of its corpse.  Anyway, it’s thumbnailed so if you can’t bear to inspect it closely or are one of my bleaders (that would be Blog Readers)  who is yucked out by birds you don’t have to look.deadjunco.jpg

  1. Because many birds change their underwear (short feathers) twice a year and their outer wear once a year , they always look the same age except when just fledged. So it cannot be told by most of us if this was a bird which died of old age. The average life span of juncoes is ten years and nine months. Perhaps its death was natural.
There are people who are yucked out by birds?

I think I am the er, bl-eader in question. Birds totally yuck me out, or at least fail to arouse positive sentiment. I am suspicious that they all want to crap on me in a bacteria-rich fashioni or possibly just claw my eyes out. You can’t pet them, and they mostly lack the appealling intelligence of even a rodent.

I like crows; they seem pretty clever and have no interest in coming close to me anyway. I like watching raptors. I like the concept of owls, but being anywhere near them sounds risky, although maybe not so much now that I don’t have a ponytail to confuse them with. I secretly like whiskeyjacks ever since one stole my sandwich – I have to admire the chutzpah.

Now all that said, that is a very striking picture of a junco, very nice. Also there was a slug picture earlier so I am full of warm feeling toward the photographer. Ahh, slugs! Now there’s a fine animal to pet and admire. The graceful lines, the glistening play of light!
