I’m all in favour of a “National Cuddle” or “National Hug” day here in Canada. Unless, I’m at work in a 3-piece suit in an ultra conservative environmnt, I don’t want to shake hands. I don’t even know how to react when someone gives me a peck on the cheek. What’s wrong with an old-fashioned hug?
There are levels of intimacy, Deb. Example: the look of utter horror on the face of my friend Elizabeth, when, upon meeting her, another friend of mine hugged her. Perhaps it’s a matter of reading social nuances. I have never been good at it, but said friend was VERY BAD at it!
Yes I agree Nautilus3, and maybe a National Hug day would help us become more accustomed to receiving hugs. I think it’s also OK to ask a person if they would like a hug or tell them you would like to give them a hug, it’s not nice to bear in on someone without warning. I also like to make eye contact and smile while speaking to someone — whether it be a friend, a colleague or a staff member at your local Tim Horton donuts. After all, we are human beings, not robots!
