  1. I gave up hanging my laundry out to dry when I found a living earwig in one of my socks and the little bastard bit me. I know I have an irrational fear of these little creatures — I’d be OK with doing other peoples laundry using yellow gloves in an attempt to be green.

  2. I know – they aren’t supposed to have biting mouthparts but they do have SOME mechanism for nipping. Just to throw kerosene on the flames of your irrational fear, Dr. Filk actually had an earwig crawl into his ear as a youngster – another thing they are not ‘actually supposed to do”.

  3. Gee, thanks Allegra. My Mom always said that was an old wives’ tale and I remindered myself of this “fact” regularly to keep from going insane — now I won’t be able to cling to that fantasy anymore.

I found an earwig in the basement of my last house and tried to irradicate it by stepping on him. This is the largest earwig I have ever seen and it kept coming up on its hind hunches doing a very good impresson of a creature from a horror film. I spent 20 minutes in an all out war hitting it with anything I could find. I thought, if this thing takes a jump towards me I’m a gonner.

  4. Loki, yuck. When Jenn was little she would volunteer to kill any bugs in the house to spare me from the horrid duty. She was such a brave little girl, but at my bad example has turned into a screaming, ear-shattering, stand up on the furniture grown-up girl petrified of bugs.

  5. You’re right about that Loki. Furthermore, Jenn has refused to take my advice when I know what the outcome will be. I asked her “Why will she not take my advice, as I (Deb) have already made this mistake and I want her to avoid to pain and anguish?” Her answer, “She wants to learn from her own mistakes”.

  6. Deb, tell her that smart people learn from other people’s mistakes. I know, she won’t listen. Watching other people land in piles of partially composted sewage is more sensible, although it may not make such a lasting impression, or splash.
