,,, and some breeds are smarter than others. I am in awe of my daughter’s 1-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. She is the most intelligent, interactive, affectionate dog I have ever met. She blows me away day after day.
And some dogs are simply DIM. I am recalling our boxer Argus, who when for two weeks we were infested with wharf rats (spring tide in a Fundy village and we didn’t have a cat) let a rat run right over his front paws. He just looked up with a puzzled expression then went back to his snooze. But he WAS good-natured and put up with a lot of abuse from the children who were then toddlers. I remember Allegra grabbing his lip to help herself stand up. He waited until she was safely on her feet before he gently moved away. Must have HURT.
Maybe Argus was deprived of oxygen at birth because Boxers are supposed to be quite intelligent and energetic. They descend from hunting stock, pursuing bears, wild boar and deer. A wharf rat would perhaps not be considered worth the effort. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxer_(dog)#Temperament
