Many efforts have been made to understand the workings of the primate mind. Koko comes to mind, and Nim Chimpsly. But humans teaching them AMESLAN will always result in a reflection of human thought, not a direct access to primate thought. Dolphins, similarly. (“So long, and thanks for all the fish…”) I would like to look into her eyes and talk to her – on HER terms. On ANY subject.
I think the principle message we would get from any caged creature if we could do that would be, “I’m bored.”
