the thing is

With fanfic (and your own fiction, but for that one must make worlds) you get the fun without the plot.
The plot – the metaplot that holds it all together – is the dyad. If all you care about is the dyad, you can strip away all the standard elements of plot and just have people living.
Doing what people do when there’s no plot happening.

Allegra’s food foibles part 1

Allegra’s food foibles, all of which will just seem like entitled craziness 20 years from now.

Hot drinks should be just shy of damaging. Cold drinks should be as cold as possible. Water should be drunk at whatever temp it comes out of the tap.

The mouth-feel of butterfat is one of my favourite things.

A juicy beef steak also.

I love chicken eggs. I found duck eggs too rubbery to enjoy, when I tried them.

Cheese is my accommodating and tasty friend.

Chicken feet in Chinese restaurants make me anxious. There’s more than one mode of the anxiety. One, they’re scary reminders that we’re all made out of meat. Two, they are scary looking. Three, I tried to eat one once and telling myself that it was a preserved dinosaur foot didn’t help. I could not find anything to consume on it. Four, being made anxious by them makes me look racist, which makes me anxious. Five, being more concerned with how I look than not actually doing and saying racist things also, no surprise, makes me anxious.

Getting a boss to pay for alcohol is always on my bingo card.

When will climate change make it possible to grow cacao in Canada.

I enjoy virtually any format of peas.

Carrots eaten straight out of the garden are your absolute best source of h. pylori, wash your veggies, you clod.

Raw cookie dough keeps you strong.

I like Shirley Temples, and I especially like how different they are from place to place.

I usually order salads in restaurants without dressing and either eat as is or put a tiny bit of salt and pepper on them.

I love brown rice and gravy. I could probably live on it.

7300 words

I haven’t even got to the good part yet.

Made pear pancakes this morning at Jeff’s request.

mOm called looking for Jeff and I distracted her with “I sent you more” for a while.

Lunch bunch today. I think I’ll just take cheese. Cheese is often welcome.

guilt and oh well

only a couple of hundred words yesterday, not enough to send along, but very satisfying.

Katie and Alex called wanting to go swimming last night. I said I was having an indoor day. I went upstairs to lie down and had an extremely visually interesting (briefly, I had scintillating scotoma for about half an hour) migraine precursor and then PAIN PAIN PAIN. Now, because I have really weird migraines I lay there with my eyes squeezed shut and the top right chunk of my skull coming off and said to it YOU HAVE NO POWER HERE and I thought about fun things and cookie dough and after about half an hour the pain lifted. First time I’ve had a pain migraine in ages but I managed to chase it off.

Yesterday I fired up the eye mask I made a year or so ago and it really helped, the heat treatment made my right eye less dry.

Still LOVING MY BLANKIE. I wish the cover wasn’t pink but hey I DIDN’T PAY FOR IT.

All my taxes are in.

I’m obsessing about my new arrangement of the Gelis song. It just stays in my mind all the time, it’s there when I wake up. Being a songwriter is occasionally not all that great. But don’t pay attention to that, you know I mostly love it. “I want no sympathy for a pain I would trade for nothing”.

Back to RED HOT SCIENCE FICTION ACTION which in this case, since Nereus is doing a controlled fall from orbit while dodging Russian fighters, is actually a sound call.

many many thanks

Many thanks to Jeff for getting my taxes dealt with. Other good things have come out of it, but the biggest one is that I’m getting enough back to cover me and my expenses for at least half a year, maybe longer if I do something radical like budget.

For his service he shall receive a really nice dinner at Atlas, or someplace else that has really good fish.

The chapter called Detour is now up to 5500 6000 words and no sign of stopping. There’s going to be a huge action sequence in about two hundred words, after I’ve done establishing this new character.

Ten years on

About this time ten years ago I was thinking about Gelis a lot, from the Niccolo series, about how the two of them tried to inhabit each other’s minds, and how it ended up in a huge betrayal. I had a three song day, and this was one of the songs (I should look it up, I’m probably wrong hey Jeff.) The magic that allows him to find her and her to trick him by moving her wedding band around is integral to the books; the song lyrics are pure fanfic, except for the last verse, newly added, which is a condensation of that part of the plot that pertains to their marriage.

between skin and flesh

Did you go straight to a shrine
When you got off the boat
And did you say my name
Did you pray for something special
Maybe self-restraint
God’s own grace to hide your shame

Chorus
I am not the kind of person
that these things happen to
and these things happen
because of you

You wrote down my name on parchment

Then set it ablaze

I know when you did it and it

Stayed in me for days

I am not the kind of person
that these things happen to
and these things happen
because of you

To the world that may be watching
We appear at war
But it is a game we’re playing
Though our son might ask what for

I am not the kind of person
that these things happen to
and these things happen
because of you

My apologies

Hosting service is being oddly unresponsive and unpleasantly disingenuous. So may change providers. In meantime, please accept my apoplectic apologies for how slow and absent my site is.

breakfast with Jeff and Katie this morning

Jeff’s off to a client, I’m going to go back to writing adjacent activities

Weighted blanket and other news

Well, my bed is even more attractive to me than it used to be! With the cover on (the kids bought me TWO spare covers to go with it) I am deliciously cool and yet weighed down into the bed. It’s really preventing the restless leg syndrome so I’m sleeeeeeeping.

I’ve had my coffee, it’s time to crack my knuckles and write.

Bud Light Canada put an ad in my twitter feed.  My response:

I ended up with two of the grapefruit raddlers in my fridge and they’re so disgusting that this tweet reminded me to go put them down the sink and recycle the cans, ’cause by Api, that’s all they’re good for. Keep the ads coming, twitter, I can do this all day.

Some shitheel gave grief to an ER nurse. My response:

Just a reminder from an internet rando that ER nurses are among some of the best people on earth and that I hold you in the highest esteem, whatever that lousy slur of a fart off of a dumpster fire said.

Dreamhost is being dick-adjacent so I’m transferring my hosting.

This brain

This brain don’t take no orders this brain (x2)
Of course I know what a list is for
I left it on the refrigerator door
This brain don’t take no orders this brain

This brain is quite chaotic this brain (x2)
I showed up with a nice bouquet
Got the wrong month but – hey! the right day
This brain is quite chaotic this brain

an extremely memorable day

whales in the Salish Sea

humpback whales

I sat it out, to save seats, and my poor tired corpus, amused at how the vessel shifted slightly as roughly half of the passengers streamed to the bow

Alex let me put a scrunchy in his hair. I put it on so his slightest tug could pull it out. He lived with it a while, I pulled it off when he complained. I told him that it got his hair off his neck, and that he could feel the air on the back of his neck now, which made him turn his head from side to side quite rapidly like a little automaton, an image I’m not likely to lose anytime soon. About thirty seconds later, maybe less, he wanted it off. His mom got it back on another couple of times, but he’s using GRANDMA POWER by preferentially favouring me over his mother as a way of contesting wills with her. Which his mamabear took with grace and no more than an amused grimace for comment.

We saw about a gazillion lizards (I saw three) out front of the Butterfly House. They are introduced and a direct competitor of a local lizard (although they may share a hibernaculum with the Northwestern Alligator Lizard in at least one location so I am informed by Reptiles of BC.) We had a lovely lovely meal at Sassy’s. We had an uneventful trip home, except as above noted.

I wore a bra, my pale magenta eshakti dress, cotton granny pants, my pink blue and black tie dye tights, & my hair in a black scrunchie, to court my queer platonic parrot.

Little E was busy eating (as he ate little clouds of powder swirled around his face, a most unusual special effect) and partly for this reason did not respond as hoped to my courtship greeting. I bowed and bobbed to him a couple of times and he eyed me speculatively but without postural indication of interest, since some witless motherfucker started making of all things chicken noises at him and he shifted his attention from me to WMF with the clearest posture of disdain one could imagine.

Leaving him to his feckless audience, I turned to say hi to someone else and learned that he’d swooped to the floor to land half a metre from my feet. I greeted him, slowly put my hand to the floor and slowly rose, as he climbed up me. He groomed me to a faretheewell (Buster’s interest in my face when I got home was pretty funny – chin, lips and cheek, same same like Little E).

Many thanks to the fOlks for sponsoring my beautiful weekend. I feel much restored.

My weighted blanket is here, I slept like a log, I felt so good I got up and went to Timmy Ho’s for me and Jeff.

site very slow

For some reason (not being hacked) this site is running super slow. Fear not, it’s here. 2.35K words on chapter. I love doing research, I just wish I was more disciplined at it, LOL. Ferry is booked for tomorrow.

I had a very nice day yesterday. Laura fed us a simply exquisite luncheon on her immense balcony (16th and Cambie facing north, ah) including smoked salmon rollups, meat and vegan quesadillas, an amazing salad, and a delicious lemon sponge custard that was like a stolen kiss from your favourite boi.

We were late for Osteofit (SOAP Hall from above noted location is like HOLY COW THE TRAFFIC) and then I went home and collapsed.

Today I’ve taken my vitamins, written some, practiced some….

continuance

Still alive, still kicking. Current chapter (Detour) is at 2K words. Sent some food home with Paul yesterday, hoping the kids would get some, which I’ve already learned that Katie took to lunch, yay me.

Got an email from Dave of a new poem, which is quite tasty.

Lunch bunch and exercise today apparently.

Cindy’s oldest is getting married tomorrow.
