I was unaware of about 80 percent of this. How much I love useless knowledge!

This is amazing — men can produce milk!!! I wonder how many people have come to know (or would admit to knowing) this over the ages. Imagine the practicality of this, especially in the centuries when the mortality rate among pregnant women was so high.
I’m guessing it would take a regimen of hormones to make this happen – not on demand.
Evolution is a tinkerer, leaving a lot of unused material lying around through the ages. Consider the panda’s thumb, or for that matter, its digestive system. It started out a carnivore, with a carnivore’s short gut. When it became a herbivore, it retained the short gut but has to eat almost constantly while awake to get enough nutrition. Evolution just tinkered with the carnivore form enough to let it survive a new diet (perhaps necessitated by environmental change.) Evolution did NOT give it a longer gut, because the shorter gut with constant eating was good enough. Evolution doesn’t bother with left-over bits as long as they don’t kill their owners – or use too much energy to sustain. Makes a person wonder, given the human brain at three pounds uses 20% of the body’s energy, how the brain evolved. It had to make a huge difference to survival.
As a tinkerer, evolution is into “hammer to fit and paint to cover.” Good enough to work, but can’t pass close inspection as to the QUALITY of the work.
Thanks, Nautilus3. I always enjoy your informative and insightful posts. Also, thanks for your kind offer to allow us to visit you, should we make it out West for our retirement-option scouting expedition.
