Still no washer, still no tree fix

I’m going to take my meds and ignore the world right now. Filk cancelled again, and although it’s Dorothy Dunnett day I have concerns about zooming for a meeting today… oh well.me in the water in the Dominican Republic

I have no idea where the above came from.

the hotel room in the Dominican Republic. A married couple who checked in at the same time got a room full of sewage for two days… this room was much better. Also a bottle of rum was like 4 bucks.

Katie was damned lucky I took a spare bathing suit. This is Saona Island.

To remember is to end all war. I thank my pOp and my unca Dave for serving. Not everyone gets in an airplane during a nuclear crisis and after kissing his baby girl goodbye, prepares for a vile, hot death.

I’m back on twitter. Honestly, I’m back just in time to watch it implode.

Alexis Madrigal: Something I’ve been thinking about Twitter: for those of us who are word people, this was once our place

People took off to Mastodon, another social network, and the previous users attacked and shit upon women of colour. BIG FUCKING SURPRISE

Victor Shi: NEW: data confirms 18-29-year-olds voted for Democrats more than *any other* age group yesterday. Young people literally prevented a Red Wave & saved Democrats. Full stop. If you know a young voter, please thank them. (from the 9th of November 2022)

WT.Social is a heap of dweebs with a user interface like a rainy afternoon in a Welsh mining town.

I was supposed to hang out with Paul yesterday but my gut raunch from the previous day continued. I made cinnamon buns not to make it better but to give me something else to have trouble digesting, I guess. I also made pork stir fry but the onions were weird.

Pawel Kosior painted the above in oils in 2020. Perfectly captures my current mood.

No progress on writing. I do feel much more cognitively with it this morning, we’ll see.

Someone came to take the tree down but it has to be the next door neighbours paying for it and then insurance blah blah I have no idea but the tree is still leaning on the neighbour’s garage. Not exactly sure what the landpeer was up to there, but Jeff seems to think things are headed in the right direction.

The washer? 2 moah day.

I just want to shout out to Jan Maxwell, a friend from Toronto, this morning, because she’s put many smiles on my face over the years and the picture of her and Soon’s grandson on my fridge gives me a smile every time I see it.

I send out love to Dave this morning SO THRILLED about your book and very happy that you’ve survived some ghastly, sad shit over the last half dozen years and remain your relatively good humoured and pragmatic self.

I send out love to Sue Sparlin this morning. I am very very happy she decided to work on being a professional actor and now has a RECURRING PART in a show made here in Vancouver. Big hugs darling.

I send out love to Lois & Bob this morning. I think about the bees and the chickens and that phenomenal steak Bob cooked for me the last time me and Paul were there. I AM CHEWIE I THINK WITH MY TUM. Did you know that Chewbacca’s ‘real’ nickname is CHAINBREAKER!? He spent a lot of time freeing other Wookiees.

I send out love to Onty Mary this morning. I regret that I have not sent you a letter recently, so I’m reaching up to my ancestors and asking them to bless you with a wonderful day of whatever the hell you want to do.

I offer love and thanks to the Best Roommate Evar™ Jeff.

And as always beeg hogs to Ryker and Alex and Keith and Kate.

Roundup

Midterms went better than expected. Ron DeSantis is now expected to be the Republican candidate for 2024’s presidential election. Everyone Trump rallied for lost; he’s obviously not helping the GOP.

Orcs (a humorous slur for Russians) are getting out of Kherson. Current casualty figures as stated by US military spokesmen is about 100K on both sides.

Spent a chunk of yesterday mall-walking with Paul and running errands, including picking up printer ink for Keith so he can at least try to get his passport application updated and sent (since Paul isn’t visiting friends in the US unless the person driving has a passport), grabbing yummy treats to stick in Katie’s face as she was assembling Ryker’s birthday present (a trampoline with a grab bar WHICH HE IMMEDIATELY COMMENCED TO USE APPROPRIATELY) and eating the amazing gluten free chicken soup Katie made and looking at watches (I want a watch). So I got a meal and a bit of family time. Suzanne was there, getting ready with Ryker for the new routine.  I’m sad but what can you do but hold yourself ready for the long campaign?

Spoke to Paul and Keith (separately) about care ideas for Paul. I just can’t believe how emotionally exhausting dealing with all this is; it’s flattening for me. And nothing happens fast. I tell Paul I want a watch and for the next hour he asks me every five minutes if I’m going to buy a watch today. I have to keep cheerfully saying nope. My sheltering tree.

Honestly I think he’s relieved he’s not driving any more.

He always had great nap game but he can now pretty much nap anytime anywhere.

The challah from Cobbs is gone already, lol.

No brain yesterday

I realized that what was happening was that I was grieving, so I let Jeff know I’m at a low ebb and gave myself the chance to do that. I had a long soak and washed my hair and smoothed my footies, lit a beeswax candle, listed and grieved for my dead, wrote bad poetry which I won’t share here, acknowledged my other losses, made cinnamon buns, and lay in bed staring off into space (or watched the final game of the world series on DVR while staring off into space.) It certainly was baseball at a very high level in front of an extremely noisy crowd of Astros fans.

I am feeling much better this morning. I will contact Paul later on and ask him what errands he’d like to run today.

a day of pizza

Made vegan pizza; home made dough, soy mozzarella, WF brand pizza sauce, capers, roasted mushroom and red and yellow pepper, a solid plank of sliced tomatoes, capers, fresh red pepper. Jeff pronounced it tasty. I should have left it in the oven longer; next time I’m going to bake the veggies, whip it out and add the cheese last.

Ate it with Paul and Jeff after the Foreshore walk.

Took Paul to Fraser Foreshore. Despite my being prepared, the little tweeting birds did not come to me. Paul is as cheerful as ever, but watching him slow down to do up his jacket and then not be able to do it makes me sad for him. I ended up doing it for him and he thanked me. He’s also having trouble with buttons. I once loved that man so unreasonably much and now it’s like watching a snowman melt, as I shore up my love and loyalty on a daily basis. And I feel like a bad person, over and over again.

We watched Sharpe’s Waterloo and the last Hornblower. We are about to exit the Napoleonic Era.

Absolutely no action on the downed tree. New washer is to come on the 9th, I’ll believe it when I see it. Next door neighbour who owns that house wants to know what’s happening. I’ll call Kim again today.

I don’t really have any other news and I’m feeling a little beat up. Peggy’s filk didn’t happen since she had no power at her house after the storm.

Working my way through the instruction book on the guitar.

The return of the catfather

Buster was waiting on the back stairs for Jeff upon his return, which made for a pleasant moment. Jeff has recovered from the grab bag of indignities that ferry travel subjects him to. Before his arrival I managed to get all the food containers and compostable trash dealt with so the kitchen wasn’t armpit high in trash.

Jeff off to Victoria

The car via ferry is the only reasonable way to get there and maintain your personal mobility, but if they ever invent a matter transporter, Jeff’s got dibs.

Rain lifted and the sun came out and it was quite pleasant late yesterday afternoon.

8814 words Part II. Sent a tiny squib to mOm yesterday. It won’t be enough to keep her (drum roll for over-exaggeration here please) fiendish appetites slaked, but them’s the breaks I reckon.

Damn that lamb was good. However in the interests of roommate comfort I’ll order chicken next time – Jeff finds the smell of lamb queasy making and I don’t want to put him off his chicken skewers.

I have more than 60k reddit karma points. Talk about yer wasted life.

Just read the opening line to a fic, “Why is Dean a capybara” and now I want to finish that prompt myself.

It’s over, the comedy is finished

Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady are officially divorced.

I wrote 130 words of celebrifluff about this and in honour of my pOp’s advanced age, I deleted every word of it.

Paul’s in Seattle.

Jerry Lee Lewis is dead. Pedophiles die eventually.

Two weeks for a washing machine, I’m still in effking shock. Off to the Junction tomorrer to wash my clothes down, since I can’t do them here. I may take them home to dry.

Things are mellow and nominal around here. Watched a good chunk of another Hornblower, they have lovely high production values and consistently engaging and intelligent performances. We’ll finish it off when the food gets here. Oh yesss I ordered something. I am bred of dreams and folly, and much fondness of food.

Rain rain

More rain forecast. The ground needs to very thoroughly soak.

Got the Wordle in four guesses today.

Whole wheat pita with cream cheese and tea for breakfast (I’m off coffee for a bit to give it a rest).

Enjoying Sharpe and Hornblower so much that I think I want to write a fanfic about Jack Aubrey, Horatio Hornblower and Richard Sharpe all being in the same place at the same time. I won’t, of course, but damn it would be fun.

Bunny the dog has a communication board with dozens of words on it; she remarked, after her owner said, YOU FARTED ALL NIGHT LONG BUNNY with the deathless words, “Sound. Poop.”

8803 words part II

we actually phoned pOp

So we got to wish him the best of the day, which it sounds like he had. Any day he can get in the Camaro and drive to the Place of the Rural Pollinators with his sweetie is a good one.

Ordered curried shrimp and rice from D Roti Shak yesterday. DOD it’s so good and as usual it arrived more or less as I clicked on Door Dash to order it. Jeff got a chick’n roti.

Keith came by and fetched the frozen food we’ve been keeping for his household. He didn’t hang around obvs; it had to go back home.

Buster trained HARD this morning, good kitty.

Kyiv still facing blackouts as the Ukrainian grid totters under Russian attacks.

More Hornblower. g’DAMN but David Warner plays such an amazing villain; in this case a Hero Gone Bad with opioids and drink, and possibly early onset dementia. Jeff and I were so thrilled that the movie/episode started with a flashback and there was no trial. (Believe that Jeff and I have made clear how we feel about courtroom episodes except for Good Wife). Now we’re shuddering because chances are the next episode will be nothing BUT a trial. Here’s hoping.

Most recent stats show one in ten americans over 65 has dementia and 22% have cognitive decline. Source: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IRVING MEDICAL CENTER October 24 press release

one quarter of the Canadian population is immigrants. Source: Statscan via CBC October 26. With climate change and other issues I think their predictions for the future are sadly out of whack, but that number will definitely rise no matter who’s rattling and jimmying the population model.

of course Indigenous people count those numbers differently, and I mean no disrespect. Population stats for Inuit, Métis and Indigenous peoples shown here.

Another chunk of the Epic of Gilgamesh has been discovered, to the joy and wonderment of archaeologists. The joke going around the internet is that our anonymous scribe from ancient times ‘dropped a new chapter’ before George RR Martin coughed up another Winds of Winter book (What Game of Thrones was based on.) If you know, you know, and if you don’t, we still have more Gilgamesh.

so happy for the rain we’ve been getting. We’re about to get a flood more, but nothing like last November.

Just heard the foghorn blow FIVE TIMES blasting up the hill. Guess it’s foggy on the Fraser.

This showed up on facebutt this am:

I entitle this picture I FART IN YOUR GENERAL DIRECTION.

Alex and Ryker at the park Oct 2022 also you get to see which of my apps is open

Hey, feel like vomiting in disgust? look who’s back. …at a tough on crime hoedown. Good to know wife murderers are allus welcome.

And just for laughs here’s my stats from AO3 yesterday sometime. I’ve posted more than 36 stories since 2017. I deleted some; total is currently 36.

Because Rishi Sunak is a horse’s ass, (and a fucking rich horse’s ass, to be sure) he didn’t acknowledge Larry the Cat as the UK’s new PM went to Number 10 Downing Street for the first time. Larry made no comment after regarding this untoward snub.

in the world:

Russian attacks on Ukrainian power generation infrastructure continue. The last 3 weeks have seen .5 of the Russian population decamp from the Motherland, and Forbes Russia said 700K have scarpered, skewing heavily towards men. Russia of course disputes this figure; the border numbers don’t add up but that honestly could mean anything.

Rishi Sunak will be the youngest and darkest PM the UK has ever had

Abortion, transgender and gay rights continue to be rolled back in the US
also lots of other places too, the place they’re starting is schoolboards, in Canada
absolute playbook

the hot and touchy standoff between China and Taiwan continues. As reported in the Taipei Times, an acceptable on line English language newspaper, the Minister of National Defence Chiu Kuo-cheng has been offered (who knows if they’ll get it in the end, how vaporous is a politician’s promise, in sooth) a TREBLING of the monthly stipend of mandatory conscripts. They already asked for five times as much and the politicians said fine they need a COLA but five times as much is wtf.

More quotatiousness from today’s TT, tell me if you can’t hear the echo of Zelenskyy’s voice in this :

National Security Bureau (NSB) Deputy Director-General Chen Chin-kuang said that at the CCP’s 20th National Congress on Saturday the party included a clause in its constitution saying that it is “adamantly against Taiwan’s independence.”

Chen said that the newly appointed vice chairman and several members of the Central Military Commission have served in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command or the Vietnam War.

When China’s economic growth begins to slow and its grip on society encounters challenges, the CCP might take action to shift the public’s attention from domestic affairs to foreign affairs, he said.

well ain’t that freaking horrifying?

this is Tessa Thompson at the 2022 Met Gala – which was some time ago, so this is not NEWS news – photo credit Getty Images. It just blows my mind what that ass (and everything else including her posture and brain) can carry. Anyway, in my fan-a–licious mind this is her blowing a kiss to Janelle Monáe (Tessa appeared in Janelle’s mindblowingly lovely and catchy and sweet song from 2018’s ‘Dirty Computer’, ‘Pynk’ –– in a four years gone callback –– and I’m allowing that notion to cheer me up, because without a word of a lie, I’m emotionally sore at the moment)

It was lovely seeing Ryker and seeing Jeff GURN (english dialectical make faces) at him. Very well lovely possibly isn’t the right word.
